Privacy, in plain language
Qibla.now works without an account, and your precise location is not stored by us. Here is exactly what happens on your device — and what optional features send to third parties.
Privacy at a glance

Calculated on your device
Your personal Qibla direction, prayer times, timezone lookup and Hijri date are computed in your browser using the open-source adhan-js, tz-lookup and a built-in Umm al-Qura table. Those calculations are not sent to any server. City pages may also render the same calculation on our server at build time, using the published city coordinates — never yours.
Compass sensors
Compass and motion readings are processed on your device to rotate the dial. They are never stored by Qibla.now and never sent to analytics or any server. Motion access is a separate permission from location.
What stays on your device
- Your prayer tracker (which prayers you marked, streaks)
- Your tasbih counts and lifetime totals
- All settings: calculation method, madhab, Hijri offset, language, theme, notifications
- Your most recent location and any city you picked, so the app works offline
Stored in your browser's local and session storage, plus the offline cache of the installable app. Qibla.now sets no cookies of its own; Google Analytics may set its own.
What leaves your device
- Weather: when the weather chip loads, an approximate coordinate rounded to two decimals (about 1 km) is sent from your browser directly to Open-Meteo. As with any web request, Open-Meteo also receives your IP address. No account, no API key, no ads.
- Map tiles: if you open the map, tiles for your area are requested from CARTO (OpenStreetMap data) and the Leaflet stylesheet from unpkg. The tile URLs encode the area you are viewing, and those providers receive your IP address. Nothing map-related loads on the home screen.
- Approximate first-paint location: before you grant location permission, your browser asks ipapi.co (fallback ipwho.is) for a city-level estimate from your IP address so the app is not empty. Only your IP address is involved; you can deny precise location and pick a city instead.
- Place name: after you allow precise location, a coordinate rounded to two decimals is sent to Open-Meteo's geocoding API only to display the name of your city.
- Anonymous usage stats: Google Analytics 4 receives anonymous event counts (page views, feature usage) with Google Signals and ad personalisation turned off. Coordinates, city, and compass heading are stripped from every event by a code-level guard. You can turn analytics off below.
- Fonts: web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address and browser metadata.

These providers operate independently of Qibla.now; we do not control their retention practices.
Server logs
Qibla.now stores no user data, but our hosting and infrastructure providers may process standard request information such as IP addresses and browser metadata for security, reliability and abuse prevention. We do not control or publish their retention periods.
Data retention
Qibla.now does not require an account and keeps no user records. Anything you can see in the app — tracker, tasbih, settings, last location — lives in your browser and disappears when you clear site data.
Your choices
- Use a city instead of precise location — the app works fully without GPS
- Turn anonymous analytics off with the toggle below
- Skip the map and weather; they only load when shown
- Clear site data in your browser to erase everything stored locally
What we never do
- No accounts, no sign-up, no email address collected
- No ads inside the app
- No selling or sharing of your data
- No precise coordinates stored on our servers — Qibla.now has no user database
